Father's Day in the United States
Celebrated on the Third Sunday of June
Father's Day in the United States is celebrated on the third Sunday of June. It is a day to honor fathers and celebrate the contribution that they make to their children's lives.
Origin of Father's Day
The idea for Father's Day originated in the early 20th century. Sonora Dodd, a woman from Washington state, proposed the idea after hearing a sermon about Mother's Day. She wanted to create a similar holiday to honor her father, William Jackson Smart, who had raised her and her five siblings as a single parent.
The first Father's Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington. The holiday quickly gained popularity and was officially recognized by the United States government in 1972.
