Former Irish Attorney General and European Commissioner dies aged 71

Peter Sutherland, the former Irish Attorney General, European Commissioner and father of globalization, has died aged 71.

Sutherland, who was born in Dublin in 1946, was a prominent figure in Irish and international politics and business. He served as Ireland's Attorney General from 1981 to 1984 and was a member of the European Commission from 1985 to 1989. He was also the first Director-General of the World Trade Organization from 1993 to 1995.

Sutherland was a strong advocate for free trade and globalization. He was instrumental in the creation of the World Trade Organization and in the negotiation of the Uruguay Round of trade talks. He was also a vocal critic of protectionism and economic nationalism.

In addition to his political and diplomatic career, Sutherland was also a successful businessman. He was a director of several major companies, including BP, Goldman Sachs, and Unilever. He was also the chairman of the auction house Sotheby's.

Sutherland died in London on January 7, 2018, after a long illness. He is survived by his wife, Maruja, and his four children.
